Three members of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) arrived at Palmerola International Airport in Honduras on February 23, 2026, eager to witness firsthand the impact of their organization’s support of Heifer Honduras programs. Over the course of five days and more than 175 kilometers of travel, they experienced how donations from GFWC members are transforming lives and strengthening communities.
Their journey included a visit to COAPHL, a beekeeping cooperative in Siguatepeque, where they learned about honey production and the many products created and sold through this thriving enterprise. They also toured ROAS, a community-based coffee enterprise, and AGRAPIL, a honey collection and processing center, gaining deeper insight into the entrepreneurial spirit fostered through Heifer’s support.
In Ocotón, Copán, the group visited a small-scale dairy enterprise and sampled artisan cheeses produced by local farmers. At every stop, they were met with overwhelming hospitality and had the opportunity to connect with women and men who are now able to support their families through the gifts received from Heifer International.
Central to Heifer International’s mission is the philosophy of “Passing on the Gift,” which encourages recipients of livestock, hives, or poultry to share the first offspring or products of their gift with another community member. Despite language differences, the pride and joy in sharing their success with others was evident everywhere the group traveled.
The trip concluded with a visit to the Copán Archaeological Park, where they explored ancient Mayan ruins and watched scarlet macaws gather in the trees—an unforgettable ending to a meaningful journey.
Traveling from GFWC were GFWC President-elect Wendy Carriker, GFWC New Mexico State President Debbie McAllen, and GFWC Montana State President Karen Gustavsen. Representing Heifer International from the United States was Jen Girten.
The delegation returned home deeply grateful for the opportunity to travel with Heifer International and inspired by the resilience, generosity, and determination of the communities they visited.
